The World’s First Digital Laser Developed in S.A

South Africa has made a major contribution to the scientific community by developing the world’s FIRST digital laser. Sandile Ngcobo is the doctoral candidate and Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) researcher who did the experimental work and made the breakthrough. The work was done in the mathematical optics group at the CSIR, led by Professor Andrew Forbes. This breakthrough presents a new way of thinking about laser technology and will be a new platform for future laser technology. CSIR has patented the technology.
