The Swahili Coast
The Swahili Coast is a stretch of coast spanning about 2900km along East Africa’s Indian Ocean, consisting mainly of Kenya, Tanzania and Mozambique. The coast accommodates the islands of Zanzibar, Pate and Comoros lying off the coast. The major settlements include Lamu, Monbasa, Sofala, Pemba, Zanzibar and a few others. The coast has been the window through which East Africa interacted with the outside world and where both cultural and commercial exchange occurred.
