1st African Woman to win the WEF Crystal Award

Yvonne Chaka Chaka became the 1st woman in Africa to win the World Economic Forum’s Crystal Award which is given to successful artists who have used their art to “improve the state of the world” according to WEF. Miss Chaka Chaka who is a popular singer/songwriter and Goodwill Ambassador for the Roll Back Malaria Partnership won the award during the opening ceremony of the WEF’s 2012 annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland earlier this year. She was commended for her tireless work for major global health issues affecting women and children and using her voice to draw attention to these issues.

   

The i-Shack

The i-shack is a technologically improved shack aimed at bettering the lives of people who live in informal settlements. The main goal of the design is to equip informal homes with solar panels an- energy saving features that make them more liveable. With a rooftop photovoltaic panel, shelters can generate enough electricity for 3 lights, a cellphone charger and motion-sensitive alarm. The project, initiated by University student Andreas Keller and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, is going to be based at Enkanini township in Capetown. The township is the largest in the area and has no electricity. A prototype has strategically placed windows that draw a cooling draft  in summer, a sloped roof to collects rainwater in winter, a floor made from recycled bricks and a wall made from mud, straw and sand to conserve energy. The dwellings are 2 degrees cooler during the day and 2 degrees warmer at night. This invention is also set to make its way to Tanzania and Ghana.

The Other Africa Project

The other Africa is a photographic project started in 2005 aimed at showing the world and fellow Africans the emergence of Africa's middle class. The exhibition of images is made up of portraits of African professionals, images of African cities at night and portraits of radio djs. All these images depict a modern side of Africa, steering away from from the negative that is always portrayed of the continent. The ultimate aim of the project is to create a 55 image exhibition, equalling 1 image per African nation. Look in our gallery for some of these images here.

  1. Going on Safari – East and Southern Africa are the most popular safari destinations. You can see the Big Five, witness part of the great annual migration with millions of wildebeest from a hot-air balloon and also track Gorillas.

  3. Mountain Hikes – The Drakensberg Mountains in South Africa make for great half-day hikes or 5 day treks. Mount Kilamanjaro, Mount Kenya and the Rwenzori Mountains are a thrill if you want to conquer a mountain top.
